Shona McGarty is an English actress and singer best known for playing Whitney Dean in BBC soap EastEnders. She joined the series in 2008, aged 16, and spent 16 years with the programme, becoming closely associated with one of its most emotionally demanding characters. Away from Walford, she has developed her singing career and taken on stage work, showing an interest in life beyond television. Her appearance on I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! in 2025 also introduced viewers to a more personal side of her personality.
Early Life and Background
Born on 14 October 1991 in the London Borough of Barnet, McGarty developed an interest in performance early. Before EastEnders, she spent around six years involved in amateur musical theatre, including a role in The Wizard of Oz. Her route into professional acting began with a short-film appearance in What Goes Around in 2007, followed soon afterwards by the role that changed her career.
McGarty was raised by parents Patrick McGarty and Jennifer McNamara and has a younger sister, Camilla. Her family has Irish heritage, with grandparents on both sides coming from Ireland. At 34, she remains active across acting, music and live performance.
Career Highlights
McGarty made her EastEnders debut as Whitney Dean on 1 April 2008. The character arrived as Bianca Jackson’s ward and was quickly given serious storylines, including a major abuse plot involving Bianca’s fiancé Tony King. Over the years, Whitney faced exploitation, bereavement, relationship breakdowns, stalking and difficult decisions around pregnancy, giving McGarty substantial dramatic material.
In 2018, she filmed her 1,000th EastEnders episode. After announcing her departure in 2023, her final regular scenes aired in May 2024. McGarty said she wanted to explore other areas of entertainment after spending much of her adult life on the soap.
Most Famous Work
EastEnders remains McGarty’s defining television role. Her long-running portrayal of Whitney made her a familiar face to British soap audiences and gave her the opportunity to handle some of the programme’s most challenging storylines.
Since leaving the soap, she has broadened her work through theatre and music. In 2025, she appeared on I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!, reaching the final and finishing third. She also released the single Unapologetically Me, underlining that singing is an important part of her career ambitions.
Latest Career Update
McGarty surprised EastEnders viewers in May 2026 when she returned briefly as Whitney Dean, two years after the character’s departure. The comeback brought Whitney back into Zack Hudson’s storyline, although the character revealed that she had moved on with someone else. Her latest work suggests a career increasingly open to television, theatre and music rather than being defined by one long-running role.
